Audit WooCommerce SKUs before an import, migration or catalog cleanup
SKU problems become expensive when a catalog is large. Duplicate identifiers can make integrations ambiguous, blank variation SKUs make supplier updates harder to reconcile, and accidental whitespace or inconsistent formatting can survive unnoticed in spreadsheets. This tool inspects a CSV locally in your browser and turns common SKU problems into a reviewable report before you change WooCommerce.
What this SKU audit checks
- Duplicate non-empty SKU values, with an optional case-insensitive comparison.
- Blank SKUs when you choose to treat them as an issue.
- Leading or trailing whitespace that can hide visually similar identifiers.
- Spaces inside SKUs, which are allowed in some workflows but are often worth reviewing for feeds and integrations.
- Optional duplicate checks for a global identifier column such as GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN.
The tool does not connect to your WooCommerce database and does not modify products. CSV parsing and analysis happen in your browser.
Why SKU uniqueness matters in WooCommerce
WooCommerce exposes the product SKU as a unique identifier in its product API. The CSV workflow can also use identifiers to match rows when existing products are updated. That makes an SKU more than a label printed on a shelf: it can become a key used by imports, integrations, inventory systems and operational spreadsheets.
WooCommerce 11.2 also expanded the built-in CSV importer’s update matching so it can match by ID, then SKU, then a global unique identifier such as GTIN, UPC, EAN or ISBN. That makes clean identifiers especially useful when supplier files and store data need to be reconciled.
How to use the tool
- Export products from WooCommerce or prepare the CSV you plan to import.
- Drop the file into the tool or choose it from your device.
- Select the column containing your SKU values. The tool tries to detect common names automatically.
- If your file contains a barcode/global identifier column, select that too.
- Choose whether duplicate matching should ignore letter case and whether blank SKUs should be flagged.
- Review the summary and issue table, then export the issue report if you need a cleanup worksheet.
How to interpret duplicates
A repeated SKU is usually a high-priority issue because the identifier is expected to distinguish products. Do not automatically append random numbers just to make an audit pass. First determine whether the rows are accidental duplicates, duplicate exports of the same record, separate variations that need distinct identifiers, or records that should actually refer to one product.
Blank variation SKUs need context
WooCommerce allows a variation SKU to be left blank; when a product-level SKU exists, the variation can fall back to that product SKU in the product interface. That can be perfectly valid for a small store. However, distinct variation SKUs are often more useful when stock, ERP, fulfillment, supplier or marketplace systems identify each purchasable variation separately.
What this tool deliberately does not do
It cannot tell whether an SKU already exists in a live store unless that product is represented in the CSV you provide. It does not rewrite SKUs automatically, validate a supplier’s private identifier rules, or guarantee that a CSV is ready for import. For a broader structural import check, use the WooCommerce CSV Import Doctor. If you are creating new variable-product identifiers, use the WooCommerce Variation & SKU Generator.
A safer catalog-cleanup workflow
- Export a fresh catalog snapshot and keep an untouched backup.
- Audit SKU and global-identifier duplicates.
- Resolve duplicate meaning before changing values.
- Run the cleaned file through the CSV Import Doctor.
- Test updates on staging or a small batch where possible.
- After import, verify representative simple products and variations in both the admin and storefront.
Frequently asked questions
Are WooCommerce SKUs required?
No. A product can exist without an SKU. Whether every product should have one depends on your operational workflow, integrations and inventory requirements.
Should every variation have its own SKU?
Not always, but it is often useful when each variation is independently stocked or referenced by external systems. WooCommerce permits a variation SKU to be blank.
Does the tool upload my catalog?
No. The CSV is read and analyzed by JavaScript in your browser. WPToolix does not need the catalog file to perform this audit.
Can I use the exported issue report as a WooCommerce import file?
No. The issue export is a diagnostic worksheet containing the affected row, issue type and identifier. Make corrections in your source catalog or a proper WooCommerce import file.
