What is CSS clamp()?
clamp(minimum, preferred, maximum) lets CSS choose a fluid value that never goes below the minimum or above the maximum.
How fluid typography works
Fluid typography uses viewport width to scale text between two limits. This keeps text readable on small screens without making it oversized on wide screens.
CSS clamp() formula
The generator uses linear interpolation: slope equals the value change divided by the viewport change, then the preferred value is built from the intercept plus a viewport-width value.
CSS clamp examples
font-size: clamp(16px, calc(11.43px + 1.43vw), 32px);
margin: clamp(16px, calc(...), 48px);
padding: clamp(20px, calc(...), 64px);
gap: clamp(12px, calc(...), 32px);
width: clamp(280px, calc(...), 720px);
Frequently asked questions
Is CSS clamp supported by modern browsers?
Yes, current Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Edge support CSS clamp().
Can clamp() use rem?
Yes. This generator supports px and rem values.
Is clamp better than media queries?
It can replace some simple responsive sizing media queries, but media queries are still useful for layout changes.
Can I use clamp for spacing?
Yes. Clamp works well for padding, margin, gap and similar CSS properties.
Why do viewport minimum and maximum matter?
They define the range where the value fluidly scales. Outside that range, the min or max value applies.
